The Primary Years Programme (PYP)
of the International Baccalaureate Organisation.
Since 2008, Willow Park School has been a candidate school implementing the Primary Years Programme of the International Baccalaureate. Best practice inquiry is at the heart of the New Zealand Curriculum. We deliver the curriculum through the PYP framework as it offers a proven, comprehensive, inquiry based approach to teaching and learning. Inquiry units across the school centre on six transdisciplinary (cross curriculum) themes - Who are we? Where are we in place and time? How do we express ourselves? How the world works? How we organise ourselves? and Sharing the planet.
Guided by a series of questions, our children are encouraged and supported to ask further questions and to seek the answers through a well structured inquiry framework. While the inquiries are developed around the Social Sciences, Science, Technology and Health there is scope within each inquiry for meaningful integration of other curriculum areas, particularly all aspects of the English curriculum.
Staff across the school have collaborated to develop a programme that meets the requirements of the New Zealand curriculum, with continuity and coverage, while offering variety and content that has local, national and international perspectives. Willow Park School is well on the way to becoming a fully authorised PYP school by the end of this year.
