Enviro Group

The Enviro-group Were kept busy during their holidays.

On Tuesday the 7 October, some of the children from the Enviro-group volunteered to come to school and took part in planting seedlings and stencilling designs on calico bags in preparation for the Christmas Gift Market on the 22 November.

If you are keen on helping to keep our environment safe come along and join the fun every Wednesday lunch time in room 22.

Congratulations!

Congratulations to Brooke for her winning design, chosen to be the Enviro-group’s badge for 2008. On Wednesday 22 October the Enviro-group used Brooke’s design to make their own badge, which they will proudly wear during their school day.

The badge maker was provided by The EFS Education For Sustainability) teachers at Team solutions.

We feel that we could improve our school environment, and ultimately our community by improving the awareness of our families of the importance of recycling, reusing and reducing our waste. Children from all year levels are welcome to join the Enviro Group which meet every week at lunchtime on Wednesdays.

DRAINS

The Enviro Group saw there was a problem with the drains in our school. Lots of leaves were falling into the drains and the water couldn't get through. We decided to put green weed matting under the drains to keep the leaves from falling in. Two times a week some people from the Enviro group clean out the drains and collect the leaves to put in the compost bin. The Enviro Group have also organised the painting of the school drains to remind everyone that 'drains only drain rain!'.

COMPOST BIN

It's really cool that we've got a new compost bin behind the I.C.T suite. Now we've got a bigger place to put our food scraps, garden waste and used paper towels. Every day children from the Enviro Group collect the white buckets (from outside classrooms) which should have food scraps in such as: mandarin/fruit peels and more to put in the new compost bin.

LITTERLESS LUNCHES

The Enviro Group regularly hands out certificates to children who have a litterless lunch.

Some simple ideas to have a litterless lunches include;
* buying chippies in larger packs and using small containers or bags to bring them to school, which can be washed out and reused
* packing lunch in a container (possibly an ice cream container) therefore not needing glad wrap to wrap sandwiches, or wrapping them in a paper bag that can be recycled
