Flippa Ball is the junior version of Water Polo and is one of the most rapidly growing sports for school children in New Zealand.
Willow Park offers Flippa Ball to year 5 and 6 children and has teams entered in the North Shore Flippa Ball competition held at the Millennium Institute of Sport and Health.
In Term 4 2008 our year 6 team were runners up in B grade, with the year 5 team placed 5th out of 17 in the C grade. We are hoping for great results in 2009!
Children interested in playing need to be reasonably competent swimmers - the games are short but intense and involve a lot of swimming! Players in possession of the ball must swim with the ball or pass it, whilst other team members are moving in to free positions.
The beginners pool is shallow (approximately 1.3 metres deep), allowing players to stand on the bottom. There is a second deeper pool for the more experienced players. Teams consist of a minimum of seven players, 6 field players and 1 goalie, with up to three subs. Games are 20 minutes in duration – with two 10 minute halves.
Each competition at the Millennium Institute runs for one term, so there are four opportunities each year for children to get in to a team. Interest letters are distributed to the classes in the final weeks of the term for the term ahead.
