Home Learning Activities

At Willow Park School, we believe that learning at home should support our children to develop a life-long love of learning. Children do not receive weekly homework sheets as research indicates this does not generally improve outcomes for primary children and has the potential to create negative, stressful situations for children and their families. Mathletics
Students in Years 2 to 6 have access to Mathletics at home and at school.  Mathletics is an online resource that enables students to practise concepts and basic fact recall.  Your child has 24 hour access to Mathletics. By using their unique username and password your child can access the Mathletics website at www.mathletics.co.nz

Reading
Instead our teachers promote children reading regularly with the support of their parents. This year we have introduced the 'Bookmark Reading Challenge'.  Each child in Year 4 to 6 has received a bookmark that is signed by parents when their child reads at home for 20 minutes or more.  When the bookmark has 10 signatures, it is handed in to the classroom teacher who issues the child a housepoint. A similar system is in place in the junior school where 10 signatures in the reading notebook also gains a house point.

Children will, at times, be asked to find information or complete work at home related to their unit of inquiry. We also encourage parents to explore the following websites that provide a fun way for children to learn at home.

The Kerpoof website is owned and operated by the Walt Disney Company. What is Kerpoof? The answer to that is not so simple. Kerpoof is all about having fun, discovering things, and being creative. Here are just a few ways that you can use Kerpoof:

  • Make artwork (even if you aren't good at drawing!)
  • Make an animated movie (really! it's easy!)
  • Earn Koins which you can trade for fun things in the Kerpoof Store
  • Make a printed card, t-shirt, or mug
  • Tell a story
  • Make a drawing

Inquiry

AnyQuestions.co.nz helps you find useful, accurate, online information.  It’s not a ‘quick answers service’ - instead our online librarians are trained to help you work out the sort of information you need, then begin searching with you.

Family maths  is a newsletter that comes out once a term.
It aims to involve families in learning maths at home.
The newsletter has activities aimed at year 2 up but the level varies in each newsletter.
